Diploma Outline
This Diploma is comprehensive in scope, designed particularly for individuals with work experience and skills, but not necessarily in a commercial office setting. For example, you may have worked in the retail and service industries or the public sector.
Having completed this diploma, you can be confident that employers will have evidence that you have a thorough knowledge of business and key business skills, which other candidates may not possess. It is also a way to change careers or return to work after a break.
The diploma offers an overview of business structures and finance; it will also equip you with a range of key skills, particularly in finance administration and book-keeping, as well as widely used Microsoft Office applications such as Excel and Word.
Introduction to Business lasts 200 hours flexi-study and is a self-study diploma so that you can learn at times and a pace to suit your existing commitments. Every Pitman Training centre also has Course Advisors, so there is always additional support on hand should you feel it necessary. The diploma comprises ten core subjects:
• Introduction to Business Structure and Law - learn about different types of businesses and terms relating to business, AGMs and EGMs, roles and responsibilities of shareholders, directors and the company secretary
• Understanding Business Accounts – to help you understand how to read and interpret business accounts
• Book-keeping Level 2 Module 1 - learn double-entry book-keeping in order to keep accurate accounting records
• Sage 50 Accounts - discover how to apply manual book-keeping skills to this popular computerised accounting program
• Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook – you will be equipped with essential skills in these key software packages, ensuring competency to a good business standard and expertise in Microsoft Word
• Effective Business Communication – learn to communicate effectively in business – by letter, email, telephone and personal presentations
• Get into Marketing - study the main principles of marketing by covering subjects such as a product life cycle, pricing and promotion strategies, advertising, attending and exhibiting at trade shows.
In addition to the ten core subject areas you also have a choice of two courses from a wide range including Dreamweaver, Introduction to HTML, HR, PR and more advanced level marketing modules. Your course advisor will be able to help you decide which subjects are most appropriate for your needs.
